Getting Started
Èdè is an iOS app that teaches you to speak Yoruba through interactive lessons, AI-powered pronunciation scoring, and real-time conversation practice. It's designed for English speakers, especially those in the diaspora reconnecting with the Yoruba language.
Yes. All lessons, vocabulary, and core features are free. Free accounts include 10 speaking practices and 20 AI conversations per day. Èdè Premium ($7.99/month) unlocks higher daily limits and advanced features like visual pitch comparison.
Not at all. Èdè starts from absolute zero. The onboarding teaches you your first three words, and lessons begin with basic greetings.
Account & Subscription
Èdè uses Sign in with Apple. During onboarding, you'll experience a mini-lesson first, then sign in at the end to save your progress.
Go to Settings in the app and tap on the Subscription section. From there, you can upgrade to Premium for $7.99/month.
Open the app, go to Settings, then Subscription, and tap "Manage Subscription." You can cancel at any time and your premium access continues until the end of your billing period.
Go to Settings > Data & Privacy > Delete Account. This permanently deletes your account, all progress, and all data. This action cannot be undone.
Learning & Features
When you record yourself speaking, Èdè transcribes your speech and analyzes your pitch patterns. It compares your tonal contour against a native reference to score both word accuracy and tonal accuracy. You'll see which syllables had the right tone and which ones need work.
Yoruba is a tonal language with three main tones: high, mid, and low. The same syllables pronounced with different tones can mean completely different words. Èdè specifically measures whether your pitch rises and falls in the right places.
Every word you learn enters a review system. Words you get right appear less frequently. Words you struggle with come back more often. Over time, this moves vocabulary into your long-term memory.
Your speaking and conversation limits reset at midnight each day. If you want more practice, you can upgrade to Èdè Premium for 10x the daily limits.
Technical
Èdè is currently available on iOS (iPhone and iPad).
Some features work offline, like browsing vocabulary you've already loaded. Speaking evaluation, AI conversations, and new lesson content require an internet connection.
Make sure you've granted Èdè microphone permission in your iPhone Settings. Go to Settings > Èdè > Microphone and make sure it's enabled.
