Privacy Policy
Effective: April 21, 2026
Èdè ("we," "our," or "us") operates the Èdè mobile application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our app. We've written this in plain language because we believe you should understand exactly what happens with your data.
Introduction
Èdè ("we," "our," or "us") operates the Èdè mobile application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our app.
By using Èdè, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you have questions, contact us at privacy@edeapp.com.
Data We Collect
- Name and email address — provided via Sign in with Apple, if you choose to share them.
- Learning progress and activity — lesson completions, vocabulary scores, streaks, and review history.
- Voice recordings — captured during speaking practice, processed in real time for pronunciation scoring, and not stored permanently.
- Conversation text — messages you send in AI conversation mode, processed to generate tutor responses, and not stored permanently on third-party servers.
Information We Collect
- Account information: When you sign in with Apple, we receive your Apple user identifier, and optionally your name and email address (if you choose to share them). We do not receive or store your Apple password.
- Learning data: Your lesson progress, vocabulary scores, pronunciation recordings, review history, and streak data.
- Conversation data: Messages you send in AI conversation mode and the AI responses.
- Subscription information: If you subscribe to Èdè Premium, payment processing is handled by Stripe. We store your subscription status and billing period but do not store your credit card number or payment details.
- Usage data: Which features you use, session duration, daily activity patterns. This is used to improve the app experience.
- Device information: Device type, operating system version, and app version. We do not collect device identifiers for advertising purposes.
- Audio recordings: When you use the speaking practice feature, your voice recordings are sent to our servers for pronunciation analysis. Recordings are processed in real time and are not stored permanently unless you choose to save them for playback comparison.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To provide and improve the Èdè learning experience
- To score your pronunciation and provide feedback
- To power AI conversation features
- To track your progress and maintain your learning streaks
- To process subscription payments
- To communicate with you about your account or support requests
We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your information for advertising or share it with data brokers.
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services to operate Èdè:
- Apple Sign-In: For authentication. Subject to Apple's privacy policy.
- Firebase (Google): For data storage, authentication, and cloud functions. Data is stored in secure Google Cloud infrastructure.
- OpenAI: Your voice recordings are sent to OpenAI's Whisper API for transcription, and your conversation messages are processed by OpenAI's language models. OpenAI's data usage policies apply. We do not send your personal information (name, email) to OpenAI — only the audio and text content needed for the specific feature.
- Stripe: For payment processing. Stripe handles all payment data. We do not see or store your full card number.
Each of these providers has their own privacy policy governing their use of data. We encourage you to review their policies.
AI Services & Third-Party Data Sharing
Èdè uses OpenAI as a third-party AI service provider to power key learning features.
- Voice audio recordings — sent for pronunciation evaluation via OpenAI Whisper.
- Conversation text messages — sent to generate AI tutor responses via GPT-4o-mini.
We do not send your name, email address, or any other personally identifying information to OpenAI — only the audio or text content required for the specific feature.
- OpenAI Whisper — transcribes your spoken Yoruba and powers pronunciation scoring.
- GPT-4o-mini — generates contextual, conversational AI tutor responses.
Before any data is sent to OpenAI, you are shown an explicit consent screen during onboarding that explains what data is shared and why. You must actively agree before AI features are activated.
By default, OpenAI does not use API data to train its models. You can review OpenAI's full API data usage policies at openai.com/policies/api-data-usage-policies.
You can disable AI features at any time from the Settings tab within the app. Disabling AI features stops all data from being sent to OpenAI going forward.
Data Retention
- Account data and learning progress are retained as long as your account exists.
- Voice recordings used for pronunciation scoring are processed in real time and not retained after scoring is complete.
- AI conversation history is retained in your account so you can continue past conversations. You can delete individual conversations from within the app.
- If you delete your account, all associated data is permanently deleted from our systems within 30 days.
Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, access controls, and regular security reviews.
However, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
Your Rights
- Access: You can export all your data from Settings > Data & Privacy > Export My Data.
- Deletion: You can delete your account and all associated data from Settings > Data & Privacy > Delete Account.
- Correction: You can update your display name from Settings > Account.
